After much thought and many conversations regarding the greenhouses and staying permanently closed, we decided that was not in our (or the communities) best interest! We received an outpouring of calls and emails asking us to please reconsider. Our customers both wholesale and private reached out and offered their opinions, and support, and we listened! If you haven’t noticed the activity yet, you will! We will once again reopen to our retail and wholesale customers for the spring of 2024. We supply many organizations, farms, stores, and homes with our beautiful plants, grown right here, NEVER trucked in! You will see new faces and some familiar as we transition this year. There will be benefits and incentives of visiting both or greenhouses and our farm in Granby; Bushy Hill Orchard and Bushy Hill Cidery. Change is good but what will NEVER change is the EXPERIENCE that Allen has and his passion for growing (as evident in the QUALITY of his plants/flowers/and vegetable starters). Please join us again this year for all your growing needs.

Goodyear Farms is a third generation family farm. After WWI, Henry Goodyear came to America from Germany and started a dairy farm. He began growing vegetables and flowers along with his daughter, Grace Ann. After his death, the cows were sold and Grace along with her son Allen took over the operation growing and selling their produce and flowers locally at the farm stand and at many farmers markets and the Hartford regional market. In 1996 Allen and Becky put up a greenhouse and grew 1000 mums; “just to see how things would go”. The mums sold out in two weekends, thus the beginning of their operation.

Since the “mum experiment” they have installed 5 more greenhouses and expanded the operation. Growing over 3000 hanging baskets, 600 patio planters, 4000 geraniums, 10,000 mums and an assortment of annuals, vegetable starts, herbs and various container plants, the business has flourished. Plants are sold retail and wholesale from April-June and late September-October.

Plants and vegetable starts are grown using the IPM method of farming, as is our other farm; Clark Farms at Bushy Hill Orchard. We feel that currently the IPM method of farming is the safest and most sustainable method for conventional farming there is. We not only use LESS herbicide and pesticide but also use beneficial bugs and ornamentals to keep pests out of our houses. We believe strongly in sustainability, the environment, and spending less money on very expensive chemicals. We attend many continuing education classes all over the northeast and mid Atlantic states to keep up with the current most effective farming techniques.

At the greenhouses you will still see Grace along with Becky’s parents; Sandy and Sonny hard at work. Zachary also helps out, filling pots, transplanting, and restocking. Please consider visiting any one of our farms. As local farmers we appreciate your patronage and support.
